What is Roulette?
One of the most well-known casino games throughout history, Roulette is a popular game featuring high payouts and an incredible variety of betting options. Stake has many different versions of roulette in our casino and is the ideal place for players wishing to spin the roulette wheel, get lucky and win big!
The goal is simple: bet on where the ball will land when the wheel stops spinning. If you guess correctly, you win. You can also make extra side bets on the roulette table for additional wins.
Roulette looks simple - you just spin a wheel. But the game has smart betting systems that help you manage your spending and match your playing style.
Playing roulette online has advantages over playing in physical casinos. Online roulette has better odds, offers games from different providers, and gives you more ways to win. This helps you plan your bets and grow your winnings.
History of Roulette
There are many stories about how roulette began. Some people believe it was invented in the 17th century by a French mathematician named Blaise Pascal. Others think it was created by a French monk or by the Chinese.
The truth is that roulette was probably created in early 18th century France. It was based on older games called Hoca and Portique. The game was first called "roulette" in 1716 in Bordeaux. After some changes over time, it became the game we know today in 1790.
Types of Roulette Games & Popular Roulette on Stake
Stake is proud to provide a wide range of Roulette games from a large list of providers to suit the way casino players wish to play and wager on the betting table. Each game will have slightly different rules, gameplay, and payouts.
Live Roulette vs First Person Roulette
Playing live casino games is a great way to get a land-based casino experience while playing from the comfort of your home. That means you’ll have access to live casino roulette without having to get dressed up or travel to a physical casino location.
Live dealer roulette also provides all of the action, excitement and bright lights of real casino play, with the addition of getting to chat to other players and interact with the live croupier.
European Roulette, American Roulette & French Roulette
There are subtle differences between the European, French, and American versions of roulette.
American roulette has both a 00 and 0 on the wheel. This pushes the house edge up and lowers your chances of winning. For this reason, it is not as popular as other forms of roulette.
French roulette has a single zero and also uses the La Partage or En Prison rule. This reduces the house edge.
European roulette has a single zero and offers a balanced version of the game for everyone to enjoy.
How to Play Roulette Games
Roulette is a classic casino game with simple rules. Players spin a wheel numbered 0-36 and bet on where the ball will land.
Each number on the wheel has a colour - either Red or Black. The colors are assigned like this:
Numbers 1-10 and 19-28: Odd numbers are Red, Even numbers are Black
Numbers 11-18 and 29-36: Odd numbers are Black, Even numbers are Red
The zero is different. It's coloured green and you can only bet on it by itself. Some versions of roulette (like American Roulette) have a double zero. This gives the casino a bigger advantage.
Each number slot is called a 'pocket'. The pockets are arranged differently on the wheel depending on which version of roulette you play.
Bet Types
Roulette bets are based on groups of pockets. The payout depends on how likely the ball is to land in that group. Here's a guide to the betting options. Note that some games may have different options.
Roulette bets are divided into two types: 'outside bets' and 'inside bets'.
Outside Bets cover large groups of numbers. They give you a better chance to win, but the payouts are smaller. The outside bets are:
Column: The wheel is divided into three columns of 12 numbers each. Bet on one column. Payout is 2:1.
Dozens: Bet on a group of 12 numbers (1-12, 13-24, or 25-36). Payout is 2:1.
Even/Odd: Bet on whether the ball lands on an even or odd number. Payout is 1:1.
Black/Red: Bet on whether the ball lands on a black or red pocket. Payout is 1:1.
Low/High: Bet on whether the number is low (1-18) or high (19-36). Payout is 1:1.
Inside Bets cover fewer numbers. They win less often, but pay more when they win.
Single Number (Straight Bet): Bet on one specific number. This has the highest payout at 35:1.
Split: Bet on two numbers next to each other on the wheel. Payout is 17:1.
Street: Bet on a row of 3 numbers. Payout is 11:1.
Corner (Square): Bet on 4 numbers that share a corner (like 1, 2, 4, 5). Payout is 8:1.
Basket: Only in American Roulette. Bet on five specific numbers: 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. Payout is 6:1.
Six Line (Double Street): Bet on two rows of numbers - six numbers total. Payout is 5:1.
Roulette Strategies & Tips to Win
While playing at a virtual roulette table is all about luck and chance, there are strategies and betting systems in place that can help you manage your gameplay. Of course, there’s no way to guarantee where the spin of the roulette wheel will land, but smart strategies can make a difference.
Quick Tips:
Start with outside bets - they win more often and help you learn the game
Set a budget before you play and stick to it
